Bias, Power, AI: Reflections from the Feminist AI LAN Party

In a world where algorithms increasingly influence opportunity, justice, and access, we can’t afford to build AI systems without critical reflection.

That’s why, as a part of PyCon DE & PyData 2025, we at Pioneers Hub proudly supported the [Feminist AI LAN Party** ](https://feministai.party)— a vibrant satellite event that combined radical thinking, real-world tech, and an unstoppable community spirit.

Together with the inspiring organizers Ines Montani and Katherine Jarmul, we helped create a unique space for open dialogue and experimentation.

  • Ines Montani is a software developer and co-founder of Explosion.ai, known for her work on spaCy and machine learning tools for real-world use cases.

  • Katherine Jarmul is a privacy expert, author, and founder of Probably Private, specializing in ethical AI and privacy-preserving machine learning.

The event was further supported by strong partners like hessian.AI, Explosion.ai, and Probably Private — organizations that share a commitment to open, responsible AI development.

At Pioneers Hub, we provided organizational support and a dedicated GPU station, enabling participants to experiment freely and push the boundaries of traditional AI spaces.

Why Events Like This Matter

In an era where AI systems increasingly shape our world, it’s more important than ever to ask tough questions:

  • Whose perspectives are represented in our models?

  • What biases and inequalities are reinforced by today’s AI?

  • How can we rethink and rebuild these systems for a fairer future?

The Feminist AI LAN Party offered exactly the right environment to explore these questions:

An open, collaborative format where participants could learn, challenge, and imagine together — across disciplines and experiences.

A Different Kind of Tech Gathering

Unlike traditional hackathons or conferences, the LAN Party was not about competition — it was about reflection, creation, and critical exploration.

Participants:

  • Experimented with real AI models

  • Analyzed and discussed systemic biases

  • Shared new ideas for building more ethical, inclusive technologies

By offering access to tools like a high-performance GPU station, we helped break down technical barriers and encouraged hands-on discovery.

Looking Ahead

At Pioneers Hub, we believe innovation must be inclusive to truly be transformative.

Supporting initiatives like the Feminist AI LAN Party is part of our mission to foster critical tech literacy, promote open dialogue, and help shape an AI future that serves everyone — not just a few.

A huge thank you to Ines, Katherine, and all the amazing contributors for making this event so powerful!

We are excited to keep supporting spaces where tough questions are asked — and better futures are imagined.

Let’s keep building together. 🚀
